Finland, the Homeland
My mother’s motherland
She came here 50 years ago
She’ll tell you more than you want to know

About how there was so much snow
They had to wear 5 layers of clothes
She tries to hand the old ways down
Now they’re our family’s own

The motherland moves along
We still sing the same old songs
She learned in school when she was a kid
Now they’re songs that I cherish

Warped through necessity
Never wrote down recipes
She makes four different casseroles
Carrot, liver, turnip and sweet potato

Traditions start to blur
It’s important to talk to her
I know I’m not much of a cook
Now I know there is no book

I’ll pass on her memories
Of being young and running free
Of neighbour kids and Helsinki
Of growing up and deciding to leave
